What is a Church Usher?

A Church Usher is a person who welcomes everyone who enters the church and always will reflect the warmth and welcome of Christ himself. They’re always conscious of Christ’s words: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”.

Ushers are friendly people who are hospitable to all age groups and nationalities. The Usher Ministry is open to all – women and men. Couples and families are encouraged to join this ministry.

The Church Usher Policy and Procedure sample below includes:

  • Church Name and Policy Title
  • Who are Ushers? - Ushers are people who welcome everyone who enters the church and always will reflect the warmth and welcome of Christ himself. They’re always conscious of Christ’s words: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”. Ushers are friendly people who are hospitable to all age groups and nationalities. The Usher Ministry is open to all – women and men. Couples and families are encouraged to join this ministry.
  • Appropriate Attire - A neat and especially reverential appearance is in keeping with the usher’s role as a visible example of reverence, welcome and hospitality. a. Men should wear collared shirt, dress slacks (no jeans, shorts or t-shirts). Sport coat and tie is preferred by not required. b. Women should wear an appropriate dress of acceptable length. No sundresses. Note: Everything ushers do sets an example for other members of the church. In addition, it’s imperative that Ushers are extremely aware of their surroundings and anything unusual taking place in the church that may require a “security” response.
  • Scheduling - The scheduling of Ushers is done by the Usher Ministry Leader. In order to handle the necessary responsibilities a total of at least 1 Captain and 4 Ushers will be necessary for the morning and evening Sunday services. A total of at least 1 Captain and 3 Ushers will be necessary for the Wednesday evening church service.
  • Seating - The proper place for seating of Ushers is at the back of the church, near the main entrance, and at any location that provides a clear view of most entry/exit doors. Always being attentive to the needs of the faithful, they should sit or stand in those places which would enable them to best exercise their ministerial role and allow for optimal focus on safety.
  • Procedures Before Church Service - 1. Arrive at the church 15-20 minutes prior to the start of the service to pick up your name badge and sign in. 2. Greet people as they enter the church. Do not congregate in the same place; spread out to all sets of doors in the worship space. Make sure to keep any conversation reserved to outside of the sanctuary and to preserve the silence of the main body of the church(For more, see policy and procedure below.)
  • Procedures During the Church Service - 1. Once the church services have started, make sure the doors are closed between the Foyer and the sanctuary. 2. It’s appropriate that at least 2 or 3 Ushers stay in the back of the sanctuary area during this time to monitor the sanctuary. 3. During the preaching, it’s important to gently ask latecomers to remain in the back of the sanctuary until the appropriate pause so that they do not distract the congregation from their worship. Ushers should be stationed along the outer parameter of the assembly to help facilitate seating for latecomers and be aware of any safety concerns.
  • Procedures After the Church Service -      1. Captain and Ushers are expected to remain 5 to 10 minutes after the service to hand out bulletins and/or straighten up the pews. 2. Close the doors to form a sound barrier and a quieter place for those in the sanctuary are who wish to pray.
  • Important Information that all Ushers Should Know - See policy and procedure below for this information.
  • In Case Someone Falls, Passes Out, or is Otherwise Injured in the Church - See policy and procedure below for this information.
  • Signatures - Senior Pastor and Usher Ministry Leader's Signature
  • Revised Date

*I wanted to take a minute (during my email time slot) to thank you for all this work you do and share with the small church community. You and your staff (if you have some) are very much a blessing. Thank you, Elizabeth - PA - U.S.

*Terressa! I received the discs today!! A few years back I was at a small church that used your software and it was perfect for their volunteers to use. The church I am at now has 2 volunteer secretaries and one found your product and I gushed!!! Her first request is a directory so this will be perfect. God Bless you for creating such a great system (Shepherdbase). Regards - Tonya - OK - U.S.

*This is the 1st time I've visited your website and I just wanted to say "thank you". I go to a very small Christian Church and thanks to you, the forms you have for a children's ministry will keep me from having to "reinvent the wheel" and I am very grateful to you. We are a very small church (about 40 regular attendees) and 90% of those are over 65. We just had a young couple offer to help us get a Youth Group. Thanks to you, we won't have to do to much to get this off and running for the holiday season. Thanks again! - Kentucky - U.S.

*I do the tithes at the end of the year for a very small outreach in the city of Detroit. They had been paying thousands of dollars every several years trying to keep a database of their donors.

I searched last year for something less costly for them and came across your database (Shepherdbase). It is a blessing and so appreciated. Thank you for all your hard work and thank you for Giving To The Lord. Peacemakers Int. in Detroit on Chene street is another ministry you have blessed. - Charlene - U.S. *Disclaimer

*This website has been very useful for my ministries with Hospice, the Hospital and Human Services. I recommend this website to any church, ministry or agency that is supporting or ministering to people. God Bless You - Chaplain Dave - U.S. *Disclaimer

*Just wanted to let you know how helpful your resources are. We are a small church and have missed out on doing a lot of things. We ordered your Church Forms on CD and are just pleased. Keep up the good work of providing resources for Churches. - Lillian - U.S. *Disclaimer

*I am a minister of the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and have been tremendously blessed to access you and pray that God the Almighty favor you in what you do. You have enabled me to access ready-designed church documents. Thanks and God Bless You Terressa. - Bro. Mike - Kenya, Africa *Disclaimer

*Thank You! You're heart for giving free resources and making things so affordable is truly a blessing. My Pastor always says: "What you make happen for someone else, God will make happen for you!" May God richly bless you and your ministry to us and so many others, enlarge your territory and bring financial blessings with good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over!!! 10,000 Blessings! Leeanna - U.S. *Disclaimer

*Thanks for making this site available. I took over as secretary of our small church a few months ago, and I am having to create a lot of forms. This site is a blessing! - Vicki - U.S. *Disclaimer

*After years of frustration and being overcharged for Church Management software, I came across "Shepherbase" and all my problems were solved. *Disclaimer

This database:
  • 1. Tracks members and visitors
  • 2. Tracks contributions
  • 3. Organizes by both individual AND family
  • 4. Creates professional letters, relevant to church ministry
  • 5. Is easy to use
  • 6. Costs a mere fraction of other databases offering similar features. *Disclaimer
  • 7. So much more.

I am very thankful for this product and I recommend it to anybody wanting to exit the cost and complexity rat race of Church databases.
Thank you Shepherdbase!
