Most of us would agree that counseling is one of the most important ministries in the church. One should not go into this type of ministry without weighing the costs.
The church counselor or pastor dedicates lots of their time to counseling. Some churches have a large variety of classes and groups established with no cost to the church. Premarital Counseling is a very important ministry also.
Counseling is a ministry that has to be a God Given gift and should never be taken lightly. The minister or person with this special ministry has to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves (Matthew 10:16). You have to anticipate and try to avoid anything that could be misinterpreted or has any possibility of adding to the person's pain who is being counseled. You have to feel the person's pain and don't imagine that you have to hide your own distress.
You also have to earn and gain a trust and friendship to where the person can feel secure to confide in their darkest secrets. This kind of trust usually has to be earned and is the main reason why Pastors are so often the church counselor.
This ministry can be an effective outreach tool for your church. It is important to have them fill out the counseling application and sign the counseling consent forms.
