Why would any church change their name?
There are many reasons why a church might want to change their name even though this can be a very challenging process in church management and sometimes causes some major issues.
Here are a few reasons why they might change their name:
- To create a clear or new priority.
- To change a geographical distinction that is no longer relevant.
- To identify with the community more clearly.
- To avoid confusion by having the same name as another church.
- To reflect the merging with another church.
Changing the name of a nonprofit organization is not just an internal decision made by the Church Board of Directors. You will have to follow a few simple legal procedures depending on what state your organization is incorporated or chartered and what type of nonprofit organization you are. You will need to check with your Secretary of State and review the IRS Code governing your organization to ensure that you follow all the rules and regulations regarding changing the name of your organization.
Changing the name of your church can be exciting, especially when the new church name reflects meaningful shift in your church members outlook and mission. If you are a denominational church then you need to check with your denomination's headquarters for them to advise you of any legalities pertaining to your name change that might be particular to your denomination.
If you are not a denominational church then you definitely need to check with your church legal consultant or church lawyer before going any further to ensure you are taking every step legally before proceeding onto changing the name of your church.
You can use this legal form as a tool to create one of your own to fit your specific church but you will still have to be sure and have your church lawyer or legal consultant look it over before using it as a legal document.

- Statement: The following special written resolution to change the name of the church/organization was agreed and passed by the members.
- Current Date
- New Church or Organization's Name
- Authorized Signature
