Free Church Emergency Plan - Does Your Church Need One?
The Emergency Plan for a church is completely different than that of a business or home.
Keep your church safe with a well thought out plan to evacuate. A well-developed emergency plan is a proactive approach to disaster that will move your church toward empowerment, resiliency, and self-reliance. While it may not prevent disaster, it will reduce its impact.
The plan must serve to protect church property, people, and the local community. It must cover how to handle an emergency when it happens, as well as how to recover from that emergency.
Emergency evacuations may be a common place in the churches, but having a plan on how to evacuate your facility in an emergency is an essential aspect of church safety. In most circumstances, churches would be forced to evacuate due to a fire being the culprit. However, there are other emergencies that would make it necessary for churches to evacuate such as gas or carbon monoxide leak, a natural disaster such as a tornado or flooding, or a bomb threat or violent intruder.
Every employee and/or volunteer working for your organization and/or church should know what to do in the event of an emergency and planning ahead could mean a matter of life or death in some situations. They need to know whether to call 911 or have a list of emergency phone numbers available where they know where they are located along with emergency evacuation maps, etc.
Before planning a church evacuation plan, take some time to assess your church's risk of a fire and types of dangers your church is most likely to face. Taking practical measures to reduce the fire and other hazards will go a long way toward distracting an evacuation. At the same time, every church needs to have an emergency evacuation plan and a way to communicate to leaders and the congregation.
