The two sample job descriptions for board members and/or trustees below can be used as a guide to help you create a job description specific to your church or nonprofit organization.
Church boards can consist of just a very few people with relatively simple responsibilities, or they can have several committees with several members each with authority over some major financial and policy decisions. Normally, the relationship between the pastor and the board is one of the determining factors in the success of the church, so understanding these duties of the church board members is extremely important for anyone thinking about a career in this ministry.
The Board Job Description (Sample) below for churches below includes:
- Heading - Includes church name and job description title, job title and reports to.
- Purpose - The purpose of the Church Board Member is to establish policies, financial reporting, managing performance, strategic planning, compensation review, budget approval and ensuring legal compliance.
- Responsibilities - 1. Participate in the planning process and approving of [Church Name]'s mission and vision. 2. Ensuring that [Church Name]'s core mission is fulfilled. 3. Annually review and approve [Church Name]'s financial goals and budget. 4. Monitor conflict-of-interest by putting policies and systems into place to ensure full disclosure of any potential conflicts within the organization or the board. 5. Approve major church policies. 6. Attending regular meetings while actively overseeing the key operational functions such as managing performance, strategic planning, financial oversight, managing compensation, and ensuring legal compliance. 7. Maintaining and supporting documents and board records such as board minutes, mission, vision, values statement, church bylaws, articles of incorporation and any policies that govern the board function. 8. If a new board member, attend the appropriate orientation and training such as reviewing all corporate documents and legal requirements for the board members.

- Responsibilities - Act as legal agents or representatives as directed by the church, signing all legal documents involving the purchase, sale, mortgaging and rental church property, only upon direction by the church. (See job description below for more responsibilities.)

I further understand that I am expected to follow my job as outlined above, and that if I have any questions concerning what is expected of me, I will speak with my immediate supervisor identified above.
