"Top 5 Things to Include in Your Church Bulletin"

What is a Church Bulletin? This is a brochure-type document with printed material on it that typically you're handed when you walk in most church worship services. Bulletins can go by many different names, but the most common name is "bulletin".

There are a variety of opinions and ideas that most churches have today about what should be in the church bulletin. I have found that the church members have their opinions also and they have been known to want these top 5 things in the church bulletin:

  • 1. The Look and Quality - This is the number one response you would get from your members along with others, but quality being on the top of the list. Church members see the bulletin as a reflection of their church. Also, an attractive bulletin will draw readers, but an unattractive poor church bulletin will be a waste of your paper and time. Have some pictures to draw the reader into the text but not too many - use moderation. Have a nice quality of paper to print them on also.
  • 2. Sermon Notes & Feedback - Most church members want a place to take notes of the sermon. They want to take these notes home and study them. Also, include a feedback to communicate with your church members with such things as: searching for your next sermon series topic, ask the congregation what they would like to see, what they would like to see in the worship bulletin, etc.
  • 3. Content/Order of Service - In general, church members would like to have the order of their worship services in the bulletin. I know some churches does not want this and I can understand that but it is a request that many members would like to have. The best way to help members, especially newcomers, know what to expect in the service is to include information such as song lyrics, corporate prayers, sermon topic and order of events. You can also include ministry news, approaching church events, recap past week's important events and use names (people love to see their name in print), and pictures. As much as people like to see their names, they like to see their picture even more.
  • 4. Attendance Statistics - This is another one of those that isn't usually included anymore, but church members tend to lean toward wanting these numbers in the bulletin. They want to see the church attendance patterns each week so you might consider adding this.
  • 5. Announcements - Okay now, even though church members want announcements to be included in the bulletin they do not want it to be cluttered with many, many announcements. The prefer to see the majority of the announcements to be on the screen before the services or on the church's website, but the most important ones on the bulletin.
