Memorial Day HistoryEach May, the United States celebrates a day called Memorial Day. Memorial Day was first widely observed in May 1868. The celebration commemorated the sacrifices of the Civil War and the proclamation was made by General John A. Logan. Following the proclamation, participants decorated more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldier’s graves. In the following years since World War 1, the day has become a celebration of honor for those brave men and women who died in all America’s wars, as well as those who are Veterans and current members of the U.S. military. Father's Day HistoryFathers Day is a day on which people of many different countries express gratitude, love and appreciation for their fathers by giving them gifts or greeting cards. Fathers Day falls on the 3rd Sunday in June in the United States and Canada. In 1909, Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington got the idea to set aside a special day to honor fathers after listening to a sermon on Mothers Day. She wanted to honor her father, William Jackson Smart. Through Sonora Dodd's many efforts, Spokane celebrated the 1st Fathers Day on June 19, 1910. Over the years, many resolutions to make the day an official national holiday were introduced. Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed Fathers Day into law.
